Nationwide Fire News
The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), announced it will co-hosting the 21st annual Suppression, Detection and Signaling Symposium (SUPDET® 2017) with the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany) as part of a joint conference with the 16th International Conference on Automatic Fire Detection (AUBE ’17). The symposium will be held September 12-14, 2017 at the College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Hyattsville, M.D.
As barbeque season nears, grill masters are reaching for their spatulas, eager to usher in the long-awaited cooking season. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) urges grillers to be particularly mindful of cooking safety in the spring and summer months, when grilling fires most often occur.
Electricity helps make our lives easier but there are times when we can take its power and its potential for fire-related hazards for granted. That is why the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) actively supports National Electrical Safety Month, an annual campaign sponsored by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), which works to raise awareness of potential home electrical hazards and the importance of electrical fire safety during May.
As part of an effort to help reduce fire deaths on U.S. college campuses, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Campus Firewatch, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) are teaming up again this year to promote See It Before You Sign It, a campaign aimed at parents and college students to raise awareness about off-campus housing fire hazards. The campaign provides information and action steps for families currently searching for off-campus housing for the fall term and for summer and semester abroad programs.
The survey was designed to learn what types of data fire departments collect; what software they use to capture, store and analyze data; and how they use that data for local decision-making. The survey was not intended as a complete census of all fire departments in the United States, it is part of a concerted effort to assess the needs of the fire service. The outreach and reporting were conducted as part of NFPA’s effort to develop a National Fire Data System using an Assistance to Firefighters Grant.
The Metropolitan “Metro” Fire Chiefs Association, a Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) held its 2017 annual conference in Orange County/Orlando, Florida from April 7-13. Approximately 120 Metro chiefs from Canada, China, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States attended the conference and elected the Section’s 2017-2018 officers and board members.
NFPA has released a new white paper, “Applying Building Codes to Tiny Homes.” The paper underscores general code requirements guiding traditional home construction and the applicability of these requirements for tiny homes. Code provisions highlighted in the paper include requirements for room size, means of escape, stairs, smoke alarms, and automatic fire sprinklers. The paper also highlights code provisions for sanitation and how the National Electrical Code® can safeguard homes of all sizes against electrical hazards.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is hosting its 2017 Conference and Expo at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, June 4-7. The annual conference is widely regarded as the most comprehensive industry event for fire, electrical, and building safety, bringing together thousands of professionals, from building managers and contractors to public fire service and enforcement agencies.
